Can You Play Old Pokémon Games on Switch?
See which classic Pokémon games are available on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, which mainline RPGs are missing, and the official alternatives.
You can play some old Pokémon games on Nintendo Switch, but not the original mainline handheld RPGs. Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed and LeafGreen are not currently included in Nintendo's Switch Online classic libraries.
The available retro Pokémon selection instead focuses on spin-offs. It includes Pokémon Trading Card Game, Pokémon Stadium, Pokémon Stadium 2, Pokémon Snap and Pokémon Puzzle League. Nintendo Switch 2 owners with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack can also play the GameCube RPG Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, added on March 17, 2026.

Nintendo’s current classic-games catalog covers Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64 and, on Switch 2, GameCube. The presence of those systems does not mean every Pokémon game from each platform is included.
Are Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow on Switch?
No. The original Generation I RPGs are not part of the Game Boy Nintendo Classics library on Nintendo Switch or Switch 2.
That means there is no official Switch edition of the original Kanto games and no supported way to insert a Game Boy cartridge into either Switch console.
The closest modern Nintendo Switch alternatives are Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! These games revisit Kanto and draw heavily from Pokémon Yellow, but they are reimaginings rather than emulated releases of the original Game Boy game.
Players looking for the exact original maps, battle rules, sprites and Game Boy presentation will not find them in the current Switch catalog.
Are Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal on Switch?
No. Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal are not available through Nintendo Switch Online or as standalone Switch downloads.
Pokémon Stadium 2 includes Pokémon associated with the first two generations, but it is a Nintendo 64 battle and minigame collection rather than the Johto role-playing adventure. Nintendo also states that Pokémon cannot be transferred from the Game Boy games into the Switch edition of Stadium 2.
The lack of transfer support is important because the original Stadium games were designed to work with handheld Pokémon saves through Nintendo 64 accessories. The Nintendo Classics releases provide the stadium battles and minigames but do not recreate that cartridge connection.
Are the Game Boy Advance Pokémon games on Switch?
No. The Game Boy Advance Nintendo Classics app exists for Expansion Pack members, but the current library does not include Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed or LeafGreen. Nintendo lists Game Boy Advance as part of the Expansion Pack catalog without listing those mainline Pokémon releases.
This is a common source of confusion. Adding Game Boy Advance emulation to Nintendo Switch Online created the technical category where those games could appear, but Nintendo has not listed them for the service.
Until the official catalog names a specific Pokémon game, rumors, datamines and anniversary predictions should not be treated as fact.
Which old Pokémon games can you play on Switch?
Pokémon Trading Card Game
The Game Boy Color edition of Pokémon Trading Card Game is available through the Game Boy Nintendo Classics application with a standard Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo’s announcement confirms added online play for battles between friends.
The game uses Pokémon cards rather than creature-catching RPG systems. Players build decks, challenge club leaders and work toward the Grand Masters.
Pokémon Stadium
Pokémon Stadium is available through the Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics application for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members.
It focuses on three-dimensional battles and minigames. The Nintendo Switch edition cannot import teams from Pokémon Red, Blue or Yellow, so players use the creatures and rental options available inside the Nintendo 64 game.
Pokémon Stadium 2
Pokémon Stadium 2 is also available through Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics. It includes Pokémon from the first two generations, twelve minigames and added online play in the Switch edition. Nintendo explicitly states that Game Boy Pokémon cannot be transferred into this edition.
Pokémon Snap
The original Nintendo 64 Pokémon Snap is available through Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics. It is a photography game in which players travel through environments and capture images of Pokémon rather than battling and collecting them through a traditional RPG campaign.
Pokémon Puzzle League
Pokémon Puzzle League is available to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members through Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics. Nintendo added the 2000 puzzle game in July 2022 and describes six modes built around chains, combinations and characters from the animated series.
Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness
Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness is available only through the GameCube Nintendo Classics app on Nintendo Switch 2. It requires Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack and was added on March 17, 2026.
Pokémon XD is closer to a traditional Pokémon RPG than the Stadium games. It follows a story in the Orre region and centers on snagging and purifying Shadow Pokémon.
Nintendo states that Game Boy Advance Pokémon cannot be transferred into the Nintendo Classics edition. The original GameCube connectivity is therefore not reproduced on Switch 2.
Which membership do you need?
A standard Nintendo Switch Online membership includes the Game Boy Nintendo Classics library, where Pokémon Trading Card Game is available.
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack adds Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Advance libraries. That tier is required for Pokémon Stadium, Pokémon Stadium 2, Pokémon Snap and Pokémon Puzzle League.
On Nintendo Switch 2, the Expansion Pack also includes the GameCube Nintendo Classics library, which contains Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. The GameCube application is exclusive to Switch 2.
Game availability and membership terms can vary by country. Check the current Nintendo Classics catalog for the account region before subscribing for one specific title.
Can you play old Pokémon games on Switch 2?
Switch 2 expands the retro selection through the GameCube Nintendo Classics library. Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness is the major Pokémon addition and is playable through the Expansion Pack.
However, Switch 2 does not automatically add the missing Game Boy and Game Boy Advance mainline Pokémon RPGs. Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed and LeafGreen remain absent from Nintendo’s official catalog.
Switch 2 can also access compatible original Switch software, allowing players to continue using the existing Nintendo Classics apps and modern Pokémon games supported on the newer hardware. The exception is the GameCube classic library, which is specifically a Switch 2 benefit.
What about remakes and reimaginings?
Switch includes several games that revisit earlier regions or designs without reproducing the originals exactly.
Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!
The Let’s Go games return to Kanto with modern visuals, visible wild Pokémon and a catching system influenced by Pokémon GO. They are the closest Switch alternatives to Pokémon Yellow but change progression, encounters and several mechanics.
Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl
These games remake the Nintendo DS adventures Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. They preserve the Sinnoh structure and turn-based combat while updating visuals and selected quality-of-life systems.
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX
Rescue Team DX combines and reimagines the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS Mystery Dungeon releases. It remains a dungeon-crawling spin-off rather than a conventional mainline Pokémon RPG.
A remake can satisfy interest in a region or story, but it should not be described as the same product as the original cartridge game.
Why are the original games missing?
Nintendo, Game Freak and The Pokémon Company have not published one definitive explanation for the absence of the early mainline RPGs. Any explanation about licensing, commercial strategy, ratings, cloning or technical barriers is therefore interpretation rather than established fact.
The current services clearly have Game Boy and Game Boy Advance emulation, and some multiplayer features have been adapted for online play. Nintendo’s broader catalog contains more than 150 classic games across several systems.
Pokémon creates additional design questions because trading and battling were central to the handheld games. A modern re-issue would also need clear decisions about connectivity, Pokémon HOME support and whether save-state or rewind features should be available.
None of that proves why the games remain absent. The reliable statement is simply that Nintendo has not added the mainline classics.
Can you transfer Pokémon from the classic Switch games?
Transfer options are limited.
- Pokémon Stadium 2 cannot receive Pokémon from the Game Boy games in its Nintendo Classics edition.
- Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness cannot receive Pokémon from Game Boy Advance titles in its Switch 2 edition.
- Pokémon Trading Card Game uses cards and does not transfer creatures into modern Pokémon software.
- The Nintendo Classics releases are not presented as Pokémon HOME-compatible sources.
Do not assume that an emulated classic can send Pokémon to current games unless Nintendo and Pokémon HOME documentation explicitly name it as supported.
Official ways to play the missing originals
Original cartridges and compatible hardware
Original Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance cartridges remain an official physical route when used with compatible Nintendo hardware. Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Lite systems can also run Game Boy Advance cartridges, while later DS models removed that cartridge slot.
Older cartridges may have battery-related problems. Some batteries affect save retention, while others power real-time clock features. Check the specific game before buying or repairing a cartridge.
Previously downloaded Nintendo 3DS versions
Nintendo previously sold selected Game Boy Pokémon games through the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console. New purchases are no longer available after the Nintendo 3DS eShop ended sales, but previously downloaded software may remain usable and redownloadable under Nintendo’s current legacy-service rules.
Availability through an existing account is not equivalent to a new purchase option. Players who never obtained the games on 3DS cannot now buy them through the closed storefront.
Older remakes
FireRed, LeafGreen, HeartGold, SoulSilver, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire revisit earlier regions on Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS or Nintendo 3DS. They require their original compatible systems and are not part of the current Switch catalog.
Avoid unsupported downloads and fake listings
No official Switch cartridge or eShop listing exists for the original Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed or LeafGreen releases.
Be cautious with listings that claim to sell:
- A Switch download code for an unannounced classic Pokémon collection
- A physical Switch cartridge containing the original generations
- A Nintendo Switch Online unlock code for an individual unavailable game
- A Pokémon HOME transfer feature that Nintendo has not documented
Use Nintendo’s official classic-games catalog to check whether a title is actually available.
Will classic mainline Pokémon games come to Switch?
Nintendo has not listed Switch or Switch 2 editions of the missing mainline Game Boy and Game Boy Advance titles. There is no date for Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed or LeafGreen.
Pokémon-related speculation often increases before Pokémon Presents broadcasts and franchise anniversaries. Until Nintendo, The Pokémon Company or an official game page names a game, compilation titles and supposed launch windows remain speculation.
The addition of Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness in March 2026 demonstrates that more classic Pokémon software can still join Nintendo Classics. It does not confirm that the handheld mainline games are next.
