Building items in League of Legends Classic

One thing many players get wrong is that you need to build items not solely for a champ (of course it matters too), but based on the enemy team as well.

Usually, summoner builds consist of:

Starter items (that eventually get replaced)

2-3 core items (based on the champ pick)

Boots 2-3 situational items Though there are exceptions, such as the Jungler keeping their jungle item and Support reserving a slot for utilities. Counter-building is used for those 2-3 situational items.

How to counter-build items in League of Legends Classic?

There’s no need to build against all five enemies equally, and don’t judge only by team composition. If four enemies deal AD but the only fed player is an AP mage, building MR will help more.

Just don’t forget that it might help to counter this champ by building MR in the short term, but if the game moves into the late game, others will catch up, so you will have to adjust your build.

Find the enemy causing you the most trouble.

Check what kind of stats that enemy is building.

Buy items that deal with them.

But sometimes damage isn’t the biggest issue. If Amumu stuns you, another champion follows up with more CC, and you die without being able to move, buying Armor or MR won’t solve anything.

You also don’t always need to finish an expensive item immediately. Buying a cheaper component, such as Null-Magic Mantle, can already make a noticeable difference.

NOTE:

For complete beginners who have no idea what items to build, even based on champs, use U.GG, OP.GG or Mobalytics, which provide this type of information.

Offensive counter-building with League of Legends Classic items

Counter-building also works offensively. Buying more AD eventually becomes less efficient if the enemy started counter-building with Armor. In those scenarios, Armor Pen comes into play.

For AP Classic champs, it’s the same. Once enemies start purchasing MR, counter with Magic Pen.

Nevertheless, pay attention to how effective the enemy’s MR and Armor are. If it doesn’t raise any issues yet, keep building AD and AP for a while, but plan accordingly for the near future.

Armor Pen against lots of Armor Magic Pen against lots of MR How to counter tanky enemies?

Tanky enemies with lots of Health don’t necessarily require purchasing Magic Pen. Armor Pen counters Armor, while Magic Pen counters MR. Neither directly counters a massive Health bar. Yes, counter-building also depends on your own position in the match, not only the enemy’s. A 5/0 and a 0/5 ADC need different items. If you are ahead, farming well, and winning fights, you can continue buying offensive items. On the other hand, if you are behind and keep dying in fights, building only offensive items will most likely make it worse.

And most importantly, keep checking enemy builds throughout the match. A perfect item against the enemy at 10 minutes may no longer be the item you need at 30 minutes.
